Embroidered fire brigade patches usually have a crest (e.g. that of the municipality), the word “Feuerwehr” above it and the name of the town or municipality below.

Patches of the state fire brigades
Incidentally, the state fire brigade associations decide who may or must wear which badge. They also specify what the patch appliqués have to be like. You can read this up in the uniform regulations of the fire brigade association concerned. To find it, try entering “dienstkleidung feuerwehr (your federal state)” into Google.

The meaning of fire brigade patches
Patches like these as an identifier foster camaraderie on the one hand and, on the other, help you recognise colleagues from other places – whether at a fire brigade festival or on a joint call-out.
You can also often tell a colleague's position from the patches on a fire service uniform. Typical of fire brigade patches is the closed U-shape. Sleeve badges even have a prescribed size for this depending on the state (see the size table below). But not every brigade uses this U-shape throughout. On shirts or for special occasions, other shapes such as round patches or even Patches in individual free or special shapes chosen to match the artwork.
